The 2018 Winter Music Conference took place at the Faena District in Miami Beach from March 20, 2018 to March 22, 2018. It featured panels of music industry experts like DJs, artists, producers, agents, managers, and more, talking about their professional experiences and giving advice to the audience. In addition to the panels, there were intimate question and answer sessions with some of the industry’s most popular DJs and artists: Mauricio Colella, Fedde Le Grand, and Nora en Pure. This year was my first time attending the Winter Music Conference, and I really enjoyed it.
The conference was first established in 1985. It is the longest EDM and dance music industry gathering of its kinds. While it has always had a close relationship with Ultra Music Festival, it was recently announced that Ultra Music Festival has officially acquired the Winter Music Conference! This can only mean that the conference will be bigger and better for the years to come.
As an immigration attorney, I could not help but focus on the obvious! A good number
of the talent were foreign born! Not only were the established professionals on the panels DJs from mostly European countries, but the audience also had a good number of immigrants! I met a DJ from the United Kingdom, two business partners from India who were launching a music streaming company, an artist from Australia, a talent agent from Venezuela, among others. It is amazing what having access to the United States market can do for foreign artists. It really brings your career to the next level.
I am looking forward to 2019. Winter Music Conference is for sure an event that I would recommend all music professionals to attend. While the conference is focused on EDM and dance music, music professionals from all genres will leave the conference with amazing contacts and know-how that will help their career. Even though I am not a true music professional, I learned so much about the industry! This experience will enable me to better understand the foreign musicians that we represent.
